Southern California patrons of Portas' gratitude for the generosity, tenacity and work ethics of Raul Porto Sr. is only surpassed by the deepest and broadest extension of compassion for the Porto family as they process the loss of their patriarch.
A detailed announcement was posted on social media including:
"It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Porto’s Bakery founder and beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Raul Porto Sr. He passed away peacefully on Wednesday surrounded by his loving family at the age of 92.
Several years ago, Raul Sr. and Rosa retired from the business to dedicate their lives to their family, especially their grandchildren. In his later years, Raul Sr. found immense joy in spending time with his grandchildren and watching the next generation grow. His love for his family was unwavering, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those he inspired.
To all our family, friends, and guests from across our communities: while words cannot fully express our sadness at this time, we want to extend our deepest gratitude for your continued support and all the love and kindness you have shown us throughout the years."
The consequences of the young couple asking to leave Cuba was Rosa losing her job; and until they arrived in America she made up the lost income by selling cakes & pastries to friends and neighbors. She continued to do so in California, while her husband worked at a local bakery, until by 1975 they opened up their first bakery in Echo Park.
This work ethic is represented on their website:
Quality is the number one ingredient in everything we do.
Two of the six very successful locations are in the San Fernando Valley, Burbank and the recently opened site in Northridge.
