Dr. Raja Guha Thakurta is a Distinguished Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He studies the formation and evolution of galaxies.

He is a member of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) Board of Directors and has been an American Astronomical Society (AAS) Fellow since 2021. He was also a keynote speaker at the 247th AAS Meeting in early January 2026.

Dr. Guha Thakurta received a Sloan Fellowship in 1997 and a National Research Council of Canada’s Herzberg Memorial Prize and Fellowship in 2001. He received his PhD in Astrophysical Sciences from Princeton University in 1989.

  • In 2025, Dr. Guha Thakurta was awarded the AAS Education Prize—the same prestigious honor that Griffith Observatory Director Dr. E.C. Krupp received earlier this year.
  • Dr. David Reitzel, co-host of All Space Considered, was Dr. GuhaThakurta's first PhD student at UCSC.
  • Dr. Guha Thakurta has joined All Space Considered twice before. His first appearance was in February 2019 and was alongside his wife Dr. Sharmila Bhattacharya, Director of the Biomodel Performance Laboratory, NASA Ames Research Center. His second appearance was in March 2022.
