The Final Goodbye to Our Pets

Image

A goodbye in December 2017 & Jan 2023 was made complete by the kind staff at LA Pet Memorial Park. The number of cremation services outnumbers the places to bury a pet; but the serenity of a pet memorial park affirms how we cherish our little friends.

Los Angeles City Municipal Code 53.62 defines the parameters for burying our pets: “No person shall bury any animal or fowl in the City except in an established cemetery.”

Unfortunately, the alternative to a burial or cremation (which starts at approximately $130 ) is to ask the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation to pick up your deceased pet, NOT ANIMAL SERVICES.

If any animals in the City of Los Angeles have died and need to be collected for sanitary reasons, the Bureau of Sanitation will come to your location and pick the animal up for proper disposal.

A pet memorial park on the outskirts of the San Fernando Valley was established in September 1928 in what is now the city of Calabasas. The family of veterinarian, Dr. Eugene Jones, trusted by many celebrities of the 1920's, sold the park to the Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in 1973. However, the SPCA had owned the park for 10years when developers approached them to sell the property.   It was the efforts of pet lovers, who formed a non-profit  (SOPHE: Saving our pets history in eternity) and for three years persuaded state legislators to establish a means to protect the land and its memories.

Their dedication paid off, and in September 1986 (58 years after Dr. Jones had established the memorial park) the legislators signed off protection for the property.   Sherea Falk, wife of actor Peter Falk (1927-2011), has been President of the Board of the non-profit since 2015.  She and her husband are pictured on the organization's website with their NINE dogs!
