Matthew and Paul Berkovitz, father & son, were "Pilots 'n Paws" aeronautical volunteers. The non-profit connects volunteer pilots with animal rescue groups in need of transport.

Paul Berkovitz (age 69) of Westlake Village and his son, Matthew Berkovitz (age 36) of Thousand Oaks,  with Paul's dog, Brody, on board, perished when their RV-10 plane lost control after turning, on Saturday afternoon, 5/3/25, in the Wood Ranch area of Simi.  It had taken off from Lancaster, CA and was headed to Camarillo.

The audio from the crash has been released but full determination of the cause has not been determined or released.  A preliminary report, from the National Transportation Safety Board,  will take 30 days and an official report will be completed and released in one to two years.   The audio of the pilot includes a revealing request: “I need vectors...The plane keeps turning on me.”

Some descriptions of the aircraft suggest it was home built. Van Aircraft RV-10's are sold as factory made or as a kit. The company was established in 1973, and is based in Auroa, Oregon.
