Rainfall Christmas or New Years Day it's Happened Before!

Since 1949 the National Weather Service has collected data at the Pierce College station. Surprise! It's only rained eight times on Christmas Day and thirteen times on New Years!

The most rainfall on December 25th since 1949, as recorded at the Pierce College weather station, was in 1983 when a total of 1.77" fell across the western San Fernando Valley.  

The most rainfall in December since 1949 as recorded at the Pierce College weather station:

  • 9.8" in 2021
  • 8.4" in 2004
  • 7.74" in 1992

The coldest Christmas Day was in 1953 at 23°F although it warmed up to 63°F

  • 24°F (high of 64°F) in 1954
  • 25°F (high of 56°F) in 1987
  • 27°F (high of 65°F) in 1990

There have been 15 Christmas Days where the temperature has dipped to 32°F or lower since 1949, most recently in 2004 when it was 31°F.   Conversely, the warmest Christmas Day was in 1985 when it reached 84°F.  The most recent warm Christmas days were 2006 81°F and 2013 and 2020 at 77°F. 


The rainfall extremes do not always continue a week later from Christmas to New Years Day, but the cold weather tends to span across the two holidays. 

The most rainfall on January 1st since 1949, at the Pierce College weather station, was in 2023 when a total of 1.23" fell.

The most rainfall in January since 1949 as recorded at the Pierce College weather station: 

  • 16.8" in 1995
  • 16.2" in 1969
  • 12.61" in 1993
  • 11.53 in 2005

The coldest New Years Day was in 1954 at 24°F although it warmed up to 69°F

  • 24°F (high of 53°F) in 1976
  • 26°F (high of 52°F) in 1952
  • 27°F (high of 68°F) in 1983

There have been 16 New Years Days where the temperature has dipped to 32°F or lower since 1949, most recently in 2015 when it was 27 (high of 59°F) and then in 2004 and 2011 when it was 31°F. Conversely, the warmest New Years Day was in 1964 when it reached 85°F starting at 35°F earlier in the morning! The most recent warm New Years Day was in 2012 at 82°F and 79°F both earlier this year (with a starting temperature of 35°F) and in 2014.
