Hospital Art Exhibit Returns to L.A. Metropolitan Medical Center

The "Hospital of Emotions" is an immersive art exhibition located in Los Angeles, California. It was transformed from the Los Angeles Metropolitan Medical Center, which was previously known for its historical significance as the city's first Black-owned hospital, which opened in 1971.  The exhibition features the work of over 80 artists, creating a unique experience that explores themes of human emotion and experience.

  • The open call is open to artists and designers from all countries, working in any medium or discipline.
  • Applicants must be 18 years or older at the time of submission.
  • Artists may apply individually or as part of a collaborative team.
  • Each proposal must clearly indicate the lead artist and all collaborators
  • The open call is open for submissions until January 31, 2026.
  • Artist On-Site Work Period: The exhibition build-out will take place over a two-week 
    installation period in mid-April 2026. (final installation dates will be shared with selected artists)
  • Exhibition Opening Mid-May 2026
  • Artists selected to participate will receive:
    • A materials budget of up to $10,000 USD, allocated by the curatorial team according to the scale and production needs of each project.
    • An artist fee of $4,000 USD per room, paid in addition to the materials budget. If multiple artists collaborate on a single room, the artist fee applies per room, not per individual artist.

OPEN CALL | HOSPITAL OF EMOTION | LOS ANGELES 2026

Almost ten years ago artists Jenny Holzer, Marilyn Minter and Robert Mapplethorpe were featured in the Human Condition on-site exhibition at the same hospital location from Oct 1, 2016- Nov 30, 2016  with 80 artists for an immersive experience. The curator was John Wolf an art advisor.  Los Angeles Metropolitan Medical Center operated "...until the neighborhood’s decline and revelations of criminal mismanagement and insurance fraud in 2013."
