US Hockey Wins Olympic Gold - Two California Connections on the Team!

40 years after a stunning win at Lake Placid, the U.S. Olympic Hockey team won Gold at the 2026 winter Olympics. None of the players in 1986 had played professionally.

Jackson Trevor LaCombe was born in Eden Prairie, MN , January 9, 2001. He is a defenseman and alternate captain for the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League (NHL). While he was on the U.S. Olympic team, and stood on the podium, he did not play during any of the 2026 Olympic competition games.

Auston Taylour Matthews was born in San Ramon, CA, September 17, 1997.  He is a center and captain for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League.

The attraction and attention on the members of the Gold Winning 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team was the contrast of them winning the professional team from the Soviet Team.  Members of the U.S. team with a Southern California connection include:

Neal LaMoy Broten was born in Roseau, Minnesota, November 29, 1959. After the 1980 Olympics he played for various NHL teams until he was traded from the New Jersey Devils to Los Angeles Kings for future considerations, 11/22/96 and continued to play with the Kings until 1/28/97. 

Steven Mark Christoff was born in Springfield, Illinois, U.S, January 23, 1958. After the 1980 Olympics he played for various NHL teams including the Los Angeles Kings from 1983-1984. Retired after Los Angeles bought out his contract in August 1984.

Bob Suter was born in Madison, WI, May 16, 1957. He was 120th pick in the 1977 NHL entry draft by the Los Angeles Kings of the NHL but after the 1980 Olympics he rejected the offer and never played for the Kings.
