Revisiting Comments 25 Years After 9/11/01 - Part 20

There were 24 Canadians who lost their lives across the three sites of attack on 9/11/01. The Prime Minister was Jean Chrétien.

 "There are those rare occasions when time seems to stand still, when a singular event transfixes the world. There are also those terrible occasions when the dark side of human nature escapes civilized restraint and shows its ugly face to a stunned world. Tuesday, September 11, 2001, will forever be etched in memory as a day when time stood still.

When I saw the scenes of devastation, my first thoughts and words were for all the victims and the American people but there are no words in any language whose force or eloquence could equal the quiet testimony last Friday of 100,000 Canadians gathered just a few yards from here for our National Day of Mourning. I was proud to be one of them and I was equally proud of the Canadians who gathered in ceremonies right across the country. It was a sea of sorrow and sympathy for those who have lost friends and loved ones: Americans, Canadians, citizens of many countries. Above all, it was a sea of solidarity with our closest friend and partner in the world, the United States of America."

Sixteen years later, Prime Minister  Justin Trudeau issued a state commemorating the anniversary of the tragedy: 

"Even in the darkness of 9/11, humanity’s capacity for goodness shone through. We continue to be inspired by the people of Gander, Halifax, Vancouver and other Canadian cities who opened their hearts and their homes to stranded air travelers and crews from around the world in the aftermath of these attacks.

“On this National Day of Service, I also want to thank those who continue to fight on the front lines against terrorism – women and men in uniform, the intelligence community, diplomats, and security and law enforcement professionals. They work tirelessly to keep us safe at home and abroad." Statement by the Prime Minister on the anniversary of 9/11 and the National Day of Service | Prime Minister of Canada

There were roughly 4,500 planes in the air at the time, and 38 of them landed in the rural Canadian town of Gander, according to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.
