Dolly is Next on World Meteorological Organization’s Six-year Rotating List

There are three lists to name Hurricanes, within the National Hurricane Center responsibility.    nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml

• Atlantic (21 per year)
  1. Arthur
  2. Bertha
  3. Cristobal  - Tropical Storm Cristobal formed in the central Atlantic in August 2026 and dissipated quickly without threatening the U.S. mainland. Tropical Storm Cristobal developed over the central subtropical Atlantic on August 12, 2026, becoming the third named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season
  4. Dolly

In the event that more than twenty-one named tropical cyclones occur in the Atlantic basin in a season, any additional storms will take names from an alternate list of names approved by the WMO. Here are the pronunciation guides for the Atlantic basin.

• Eastern North Pacific Names (24 per year)
• Central North Pacific Names (12 names per list) 
  • Lala was the first name of the 2026 Central Pacific hurricane season.
  • The names are used one after the other. When the bottom of one of the four lists is reached, the next name is the top of the next list.

 Both the Atlantic & Eastern North Pacific names are recycled every 6 years. Names are re-issued unless "a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name for a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity." History of naming tropical cyclones and retired names.

Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms had been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. They are now maintained and updated through a strict procedure by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization.
