Walmart made headlines thrice surrounding events of 9/11/01. One, no-fault of theirs, was items purchased at Walmart to create fake explosives, secondly employee pins which honored the event.
A Florida Walmart in 2016 featured a display "Never Forget" with a U.S. flag made of Coca Cola cartons and two replicas of the towers. While it was perceived by some as disrespectful, the application of jeering Walmart commentators missed the fact if the depiction did not include the towers the possibility of outrage would have been equally loud.
However, what was possibly the cause for uproar was the fact the terrorists had purchased items "Marwan Al-Shehhi went to Walmart on Copans Road in Pompano Beach, Florida" to create fake explosives.

"A store manager and a Wal-Mart spokesman at the company’s Arkansas headquarters refused to give details of Atta’s visit, and said only that they are cooperating with the FBI."
But it was the quiet gesture by Walmart employees which garnered little media attention but was a subtle statement of respect.
"Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, Walmart distributed a commemorative employee pin that transformed its familiar Smiley mascot into a somber tribute. Instead of the cheerful face associated with the company’s famous Rollback advertising campaigns, the pin featured a frown and a single tear, accompanied by a blue banner reading “SEPTEMBER 11, 2001.” Employees could wear the pin on their Walmart vests as businesses across the country responded to the national tragedy."
