Twenty-five years ago, many local newspapers were primarily accessed in-print or with a flip-through-image which is often archived as images but with text not easily searchable.
The fascinating insight into personal, onsite, stories by local citizens across the country is exampled in the article: How the Albuquerque Journal covered 9/11 in New Mexico.
On Sept. 11, 2001, the Albuquerque Journal published its first and only afternoon “Extra.” The Albuquerque Journal is a 100 year old local publication, owned continuously by the local Pepperday/Lang family. "Many New Mexicans were either in New York or in our nation’s capital at the time. They reached out to us and we to them.
Among them were members of the Kirtland Partnership Committee who were in the Pentagon when the 747 struck. “We heard a noise, then felt a shudder of the building and the sound of breaking glass,” Tony Strati said in a phone interview to the Journal less than an hour after the attack."
Similarly in West Virginia, which depended on AP reporters for their news feed of events in New York and New Jersey, but a month later the issues of security were reflected in local news reports.

- "Our courthouse was built in an age of innocence, and that age is long gone, " Judge David Niebert told Mason County commissioners at their Thursday meeting
- The courthouse has experienced problems in the past, including a bomb being discharged in the jail, and now, the security of judicial officers is a point of concern.
- Mason County is not the only county experiencing problems with security
- "Judge Nibert and I are in four different courthouses," Judge Tom Evans said. "And each county has got about the same problem as you have hear."
The Point Pleasant Registrar was established in 1862 as The Weekly Register and then in 1909 became a daily newspaper. It merged in 2022 with the River Cities Tribune & Register.
