Revisiting Comments 25 Years After 9/11/01 - Part 50

This concludes 50 days.

An entire generation exists now who were born after 9/11/01; when 2,997 people were killed, across three locations. Remembrances for family and community reinforce the value of life.

The palpability of death which hung, for years, over each site of the devastation has waned. Perhaps the many prayers said and solemn memorials since erected may have quelled some of the unmistaken grief when you approached any of the sites.

It will be twenty-five years since the 9/11/01/ attack on America.  The concludes 50 days of commentaries made in the days and weeks following the attack:

9-11-01 Statement by the President in Address to the Nation

Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured, and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks.

The functions of our government continue without interruption. Federal agencies in Washington which had to be evacuated today are reopening for essential personnel tonight, and will be open for business tomorrow. Our financial institutions remain strong, and the American economy will be open for business, as well.

The search is underway for those who are behind these evil acts. I've directed the full resources of our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and to bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.....

....This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time. None of us will ever forget this day. Yet, we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world.

Good evening. Five years ago, this date - September the 11th - was seared into America's memory. Nineteen men attacked us with a barbarity unequaled in our history. They murdered people of all colors, creeds, and nationalities - and made war upon the entire free world. Since that day, America and her allies have taken the offensive in a war unlike any we have fought before. Today, we are safer, but we are not yet safe.

The attacks were meant to bring us to our knees, and they did. But not in the way the terrorists intended. Americans united in prayer, came to the aid of neighbors in need, and resolved that our enemies would not have the last word. The spirit of our people is the source of America's strength. And we go forward with trust in that spirit, confidence in our purpose and faith in a loving God who made us to be free.

I remember a message sent to the American people from Queen Elizabeth. It was on September 11. Her ambassador read a prayer of service at St. Thomas Church in New York, where she poignantly reminded us, quote, “Grief is the price we pay for love.”.....

The American story — the American story itself changed that day. But what we did change — what we will not change, what we cannot change, never will, is the character of this nation that the terrorists thought they could wound.

And what is that character? The character of sacrifice and love, of generosity and grace, of strength and resilience.
