Little Tujunga Canyon Road pt 1

Image

Little Tujunga Cyn Road was built in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

There are two summits that attract  tourists, motorcycle riders, and lovers of nature. The elevation starts at 1000 ft and at it's highest, deep into the San Gabriel Mountains it will approach 2700 ft. It is 18 miles of adventure east to west ending at the bottom of Limerick Peak (2900 ft )

Conversely, on the west in West Hills is Woolsey Cyn which is adjacent to Oat Mountain, but a smaller peak of 2000 feet. The road splits and in one path becomes the entrance to the once notorious Santa Susana Labs. The other path is the start of Black Canyon, which has its share of hairpin turns as it leads into the old studio homes in East Simi Valley.

Little Tujunga Cyn similarly has several hairpins which lead into a split:

  • past the Kagel Truck Trail and then another split; going west to Lopez Canyon Rd or
  • east to  Mendenhall Mountain Way towards  Mendenhall Peak, which has an impressive elevation of over 4500 feet.(compare that to the top of the Grapevine, off the 5 freeway, which is 4400 ft)

Further into the canyon the road approaches another split:

  • Easterly is Pacioma Rd (ajeep trail) which runs up near the 3700 ft summit of Pinnacle Peak and then drops down into the canyon eventually intersecting the Pacific Crest Trail.
  • At Pinnacle Peak summit, on the west side of the road, adjacent to the parking trail is the Santa Clara Truck Trail which heads west.
  • Don't miss the stunning view to the north.

Main highway, smooth, well-maintained - PAVEMENT
Mountain climb, hairpins, tight, many - CURVES
