It is commonly reported that Victory Gardens originated during WW2 but they actually were promoted by US Gov't posters during WW1.

Numerous organizations, including the federal government, continued to appeal to  Americans to continue to conform to wartime measures, including voluntary rationing and war gardens. After the war the more palatable term "victory gardens" was promoted, through 1920.  This term was then used during WW2 to promote the same initiative.
