Chumash Indian Museum Offers a Native Plant Guide

Image

The recent declaration of a drought as well as an emphasis for reduction in water lawns may encourage residents of the San Fernando Valley to look at native plants.  One way to assure you are not being mis-guided would be to look at NATIVE AMERICAN resources for direction.  Locally, we have the Chumash Indian Museum and those who oversee the educational and historical preservation.   A wonderful booklet is available online for free, see the link below:  (Gratitude might be to consider to support the museum)

Based on our ethnobotany booklet you receive on your visit to the museum, this PDF provides vyou with pictures, native plant names, and plant uses by the Chumash in a downloadable format! Fun to look through before hiking or visiting the museum trails and gardens or while sitting in the comfort of your own home. The museum is supported by donations and membership.

There are 55 plants detailed in this booklet including:

  • Arroyo Willow -  (Salix lasiolepis)
  • Basket Bush/ Three-Leaved Sumac - (Rhus trilobata)
  • Basket Rush - (Juncus textilis)
  • Big Berry Manzanita - (Arctostaphylos glauca)
