Military Caregiver Month

Unlike some other military-themed observances, Month of the Military Caregiver is not a federal holiday, military bases do not give their contractors and military members time off, etc. It is an observance that primarily acts as a way to raise awareness of both wounded warriors and the people who care for them. Month of the Military Caregiver is observed in May it is not the same as National Family Caregivers Month, which is observed in November.

Ways to show your support:

  • volunteer with the Department of Veterans Affairs, or help (or relieve) a caregiver in your family or a  friends family.
  • Help the morale of care providers by listening.VA Caregiver Support Program (veteran.com)
  • Grocery shop for their client
  • Drive the veteran to medical appointments or to the bank? 
  • Aid with meal prep as needed
  • Volunteer at a Veterans facility
  • Department of Veterans Affairs have determined family caregivers spend over 24 hours a week providing care;  25% of those will spend more than 40 hours each week providing care.

For those caregivers not eligible to enroll in the PCAFC, the VA offers support. This is in the form of mentoring, training, educational resources, and other tools to better help you assist the veteran under your care and tend to your own mental health needs.
