18M Deep, 500meter Long Narco Tunnel Discovered Outside San Diego - Ongoing Investigation

Six Californian residents were arrested from Huntington Beach, Perris, San Ysidro, and San Diego; for their part in a $25 million illegal drug operation consisting of:

  • 799.3 kilograms of cocaine
  • 74.8 kilograms of methamphetamine
  • 1.6 kilograms of heroine

House on Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz Street - Mexico

  • is 240 meters from the United States border
  • is in the custody of the Mexican Army and Municipal Police as they wait for a search warrant to allow them legal entry
  • is in front of a screen factory

House on Via de la Amistad Street - United States

  • is 650 meters from the Otay pedestrian crossing into the United Street
  • was the scene of 28 kilograms of drugs were seized on March 2nd
  • was being monitored by Homeland Security agents (San Diego Office)

 It was activity by multiple individuals in various cars, entering the Via de la Amistad Street house Friday the 13th of May, and then exiting with cardboard boxes which resulted in Homeland Security agents by evening to 

  • Enter the house
  • Seize the cars and drugs
  • Arrest four men and two women.
  • Discover a piece of cement cut from the floor which lead to the underground passageway

The passageway was

  • 500 meters long (1640 feet)
  • 18meters deep (59 feet)
  • 1.20 meters in diameter (3.9 feet)
  • Sophisticated with 
    • walls reinforced with metal beams
    • electricity
    • rails
    • a ventilation system

No information has been released as to which cartel is involved with this operation. but Juan Munoz, special agent in charge of the San Diego Homeland Security Investigations office, said of the tunnel "it served the needs of one of the main organizations dedicated to drug trafficking."
