Weather Underground is owned by The Weather Company, a subsidiary of IBM.

Prior to its purchase Oct 28,2015 by IBM as part of the purchase of the Weather Company; Wunderground was an assemblage of independent personal weather stations. One of the oldest listings in Southern California is the Burbank Airport. KBUR  The Burbank airport opened on October 1, 1928.  The data on Wunderground for KBUR goes back to 1/1/1945

Wunderground information comes from the National Weather Service (NWS), and over 250,000 personal weather stations (PWS). The site is available in many languages, and customers can access an ad-free version of the site with additional features for an annual fee. 


What is a Personal Weather Station?

A personal weather station is a set of weather measuring instruments that you can install at your own home or business. The number of instruments can vary, but most personal weather stations include instruments to measure temperature, relative humidity, pressure, rain fall, and wind speed and direction. The qualification to be a PWS for Wunderground include ability to accumulate these three key datum:  

  • Outside temperature and humidity – then used with IBM & NWS data to chart data 
    • Dew point
    • Heat index
    • Other comfort factors  
  • Wind speed and direction- Charted
    • Charted over hours, days, and months
    • Gusts are also charted T 
  • Rainfall – 
    • Rate of rain
    • Accumulation over hours
    • Accumulation over the year

Additionally:

  • PWS data is compared with neighboring weather stations data 
    • To eliminate data that is skewed too much
    • To generate custom long-range weather forecasts.
  • PWS needs to be updated at regular intervals
    • Measure changing conditions creates better the data points
    • Charts generated from PWS reporting hourly are only used in the longer time frames.
  • The 250,000 PWS contributions create data that is generally viewed more accurate than the NWS
