Moving the Homeless for Mayoral Innauguration

Bass campaign promises dealing with increased homeless in the city did not besmirch her predecessor, who has now removed homeless surrounding her downtown inauguration site.

The LA Times is one of many media outlets reporting about the removal of "unhoused residents" picked up and driven in vans to the LA Grand Hotel.  It is the general consensus of those escorted away, from the area surrounding 1st and Spring streets, it was due to the swearing-in of Karen Bass on Sunday outside City Hall.   

  • The L.A. Grand Hotel is scheduled to shut down January 31st. 
  • Evictions notices were delivered to the residents in October 
  • September reports indicate there were 400 residents
  • November reports indicate there were 286 residents
  • Project RoomKey in total housed 10,000 residents of which 4,400 were placed in permanent housing.   
  • The thirteen story L.A. Grand Hotel was built in 1928 outside of the height regulations
  • Shenzhen World Group purchased the hotel and property in 2010
  • FEMA reimbursing the city 100% of the costs for Project RoomKey
  • There are no plans for the thirteen-story structure to be demolished, it will be restored and refurbished as apartments.
  • The developer's plan is for a 77-story structure adjacent to the current thirteen story building:
    •  242 condominiums
    • 559 hotel rooms
    • 28,700 square feet of retail along Figueroa St.
  • The project remains on hold pending investigation by the US Attorney journal of allegations of corruption, based on the exchange of  $500,000 between unnamed parties.  L.A. Council member Jose Huizar. He is currently serving time in Prison for secretly receiving monies.
  • Advocates for the 200-400 residents proposed, in September, the LA City Council purchase the hotel on top of the $5.4 million in expenditures already used for the Project RoomKey program,
