He was born in Los Angeles, raised in Oakland, California, and upon graduating from high school in 1952 moved back to Los Angeles to attend LIFE Bible College (now in Azusa as Life Pacific University) on the campus of Angelus Temple in Los Angeles. He graduated in 1956 and after getting a second degree, he eventually was asked in 1969 to Pastor a small Four-Square church in Van Nuys with 18 members primarily over the age of 65 years, a contrast to the 35 year old married man with a small family.  The Van Nuys Foursquare Church would become Church on the Way which had international influence for decades and over 10,000 members who became leaders in the Church, business, government, and education.

From the Church on the Way Facebook page

Majesty, worship His Majesty!
Unto Jesus be all glory, honor and praise.
Majesty, Kingdom authority,
Flows from His throne, unto His own,
His anthem raise.

So exalt, lift up on high the name of Jesus.
Magnify, come glorify, Christ Jesus the King.
Majesty, worship His Majesty,
Jesus who died, now glorified,
King of all kings.
