Anniversary Series: California Highway Patrol 96 years!

The West Valley Area was created in 1969 with the purpose of assuming the traffic responsibilities for the region’s freeways & highways from the Los Angeles Police Department.

The California Highway Patrol issued a statement concerning their 96th anniversary:

"The mission of the California Highway Patrol is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security."

"Assist those in peril or distress, and, if necessary, lay down my life rather than swerve from the path of duty.”  Etched into our Memorial Fountain are the names of 233 California Highway Patrol officers who upheld that oath, making the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.

CHP WELCOMES 130 NEW OFFICERS DEDICATED TO SERVING CALIFORNIA

Southern Division

  • Approximately one-third of all CHP motorcycles are assigned to Southern Division.
  • Despite being the smallest geographically of the CHP's eight field Divisions, Southern Division has the largest number of uniformed and non-uniformed employees. Los Angeles is the real-world training ground for recently graduated officers. It is largely due to the workload of Southern Division whose officers handles the highest number of collisions in the state and issue over 250,000 citations annually.

  • The West Valley Area was created in 1969 with the purpose of assuming the traffic responsibilities for the region’s freeways and highways from the Los Angeles Police Department.
  • The California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) West Valley Area office has a patrol area of approximately 400 square miles, providing services to residents within the City of Los Angeles, Hidden Hills, Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village, Malibu, Lake Manor, Twin Lakes, San Fernando, and Topanga Canyon, reaching approximately 2.1 million community members and those traveling through the area.
  • In an effort to curb child injuries in collisions, the West Valley Area conducts weekly child safety seat inspection appointments, free of charge, to the public.
