Starbucks Closures in the San Fernando Valley

There are over 150 Starbuck locations, in California, of the 400 announced closures, of which at least 8-10 are located in the San Fernando Valley.

A September 25th letter to the public, was posted on Starbucks website. It detailed the closure of locations in North America

  • Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol announced the closures, which some claim it is part of his “Back to Starbucks” plan, returning it an era more favorable
  • 400 stores will be closed - 1% of all North American locations
  • They have >30,000 retail stores globally
  • "We will end the fiscal year with nearly 18,300 total Starbucks locations – company operated and licensed – across the U.S. and Canada."
  • 900 workers will be laid off, with options to receive a severance package or change employment to a nearby location.
  • Closure is part of the brand’s $1 billion restructuring plan
    • "Uplift more than 1,000 locations”
    • Open more stores in fiscal year 2026
  • A July 29th press release, related to quarterly earnings call, by the company, revealed closures were going to happen for " mobile-only and pick-up-only stores"

Original news reports listed 32 locations in California and only one in the San Fernando Valley,  at 9420 Reseda Blvd in Northridge. Early comments on various social media sites indicated there were five locations in the west San Fernando Valley based on notices posted at store locations, including West Hills and Canoga Park.  Public lists do not include these two sites. There are over 150 locations in California of the 400 announced closures.

    A 2022 article from the Coffee Chronicle, by Asser Christensen, detailed where they source their coffee, and the fact they purchase only 3% of the entire global coffee supply.  So, while tariffs could be a cost factor, Starbucks purchasing is spread across many countries not  assigned a severe tariff percentage.
