Repurpose Sweaters: Unravel for Yarn or Make Pumpkins

Image

Interest in wearing garments intact, such as new-with-tags, thrifted or from estate sales is shifting & expanding to refitting, reconfiguring or repurposing. And more so with on-line aids!

The key to repurposing clothing

  • Start with quality fabric. A garment that may not necessarily be a designer, high-fashion piece but is composed of natural fibers can easily be taken apart and resewn with less stress on the original or new seams than a garment made from manufactured fibers but in the same similar original price-range.
  • Natural fiber garments can easily absorb new dyes to customize the color.
  • Know when a garment cannot be cleaned, whether it is odors or stains. And yield to either salvaging elements or utilize it for a utility cleaning cloth.
  • Know when you have accumulated too many options, too many garments. Be willing to trade with someone else to aid regenerating interest in your projects
  • Don't thrive on compliments or opinions from others. Appreciate these inputs but learn to enjoy your projects for your own satisfaction and creativity.
  • Focus on a few trustworthy online resources for inspiration and instruction. Don't get overwhelmed scrolling and reviewing what everyone else is doing, so much you have no energy or time to start and finish your own projects.
  • Don't get pigeonholed into one category of projects. Such as only purses, only aprons, only shirts, etc UNLESS you intend to make it a business and then make sure you stay focused and don't offer to many varieties until you have assistance in producing your artistry.
  • Repurposing a garment for home decor can be a happy jaunt, a reprieve, away from the stress of making a garment. A holiday home decor item does not have the parameters a garment might impose (size, age or situation appropriate, time consuming attachments such as trims, buttons and zippers)
