The Los Angeles Public Library is the regional office for the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Additionally the Washington DC office offers many virtual events.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

  • A federal agency under the Department of Commerce
  • Responsible for granting U.S. patents and registering trademarks. 
  • The mission is to drive U.S. innovation and global competitiveness for the benefit of all Americans.
  • Advises the president of the United States, through the secretary of commerce, and U.S. government agencies on national and certain international intellectual property (IP) policy issues. 
  • Advises Federal departments and agencies on IP policy matters in the U.S. and other countries.
  • Furthers effective IP protection for U.S. innovators and entrepreneurs worldwide by working with other agencies to secure strong IP provisions in free trade and other international agreements. 
  • Provides training, education, and capacity building programs designed to foster respect for IP and encourage the development of strong IP enforcement regimes by U.S. trading partners.
  • Regional office at the Los Angeles Public Library provides Intellectual Property Resources 
    • Located in the Science, Technology, and Patents Department
    • Offers: computerized searching of patents, trademarks, and copyrights. 
    • Library users perform their own searches. 
    • Computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. 
    • Ask library staff for instructions on use. 
    • They also have collections in print and microfilm.
