Revisiting Comments 25 Years After 9/11/01 - Part 2

The palpability of death which hung, for years, over each site of the devastation has waned. Perhaps the many prayers said and solemn memorials since erected may have quelled some of the unmistaken grief when you approached any of the sites. It will be twenty-five years since the 9/11/01/ attack on America. Each day leading up to 9/11/2026 we will repost commentaries made in the days and weeks following the attack 25 years ago.

GOVERNOR DAVIS URGES TOLERANCE IN WAKE OF TERRORISM

Provides Resources for Parents, Schools, Communities

SACRAMENTO - Governor Gray Davis today called on all Californians to work in their homes, workplaces, schools and communities to promote ethnic and religious tolerance in the aftermath of Tuesday's horrific terrorist attacks.

"Our great nation is great because of our diversity and tolerance for people of all cultures and religions," Governor Davis said. " In the coming days, we must talk to our children and calm their fears. And we must not let our justified rage at terrorist acts destroy the very spirit of tolerance and unity that makes our country strong."

The Governor urged parents to spend time with their children discussing what it means to be an American and the values of diversity and community. He sent to California public schools and made available on his web site a list of materials that may be helpful for schools, parents and community groups to in promoting understanding and tolerance of others.

Governor Davis urged teachers and parents to calm the fears of children by discussing the many acts of heroism and goodness that have occurred since the terrorist attacks. Thousands of people have responded to the tragedy by giving blood, volunteering services and showing uncommon compassion to their fellow citizens.

"We do not know who is responsible for these acts, and we must resist the urge to focus our anger or seek vengeance on any group or person," the Governor said. "Instead, let us as Californians and Americans focus our energies on the values of compassion and tolerance that are the hallmarks of what it means to be an American."
