In honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Getty hosts its third annual family event to learn about Southern California's vibrant Native American cultures. The theme this year celebrates flora, with activities sharing traditional and contemporary Indigenous perspectives and narratives.
ACTIVITIES
Experiment with solar exposures in a cyanotype activity led by Metzli Projects
Make your own Tongva clapper stick with Gabrielino artist, educator, and musician Lazaro Arvizu, Jr.
MUSIC
Celebrate with performers from the Wildhorse Native American Association as they demonstrate traditional dance styles and songs. 11–11:20 a.m. & 2–2:20 p.m.
Dance along to music performed by Flower Songs (Xochi Cuicatl in Nahuatl) (1–1:20 p.m. & 3–3:20 p.m.), musicians showcasing Indigenous instruments, poetry, and languages of Mesoamerica
FOOD
Snack on a tasting menu inspired by the cookbook Cooking the Native Way: Chia Cafe Collective featuring cacao, chia seeds, maíz, and amaranth, and take a recipe card to try at home
FILM
Experience films by performance artist, visual artist, and composer Kite (Oglála Lakȟóta), screening throughout the day in the Museum Lecture Hall. Beginning 11:30 a.m.
POETRY
Enjoy live readings by poets Solange Aguilar (Mescalero Apache, Yoeme, Kalinga, Kapampangan), Jessa Calderon (Tongva, Chumash, Yoeme), and Emily Clarke (Cahuilla)

TOURS
Join Herb Club LA’s Andrea Jimenez (Chichimeca, Maya) for a garden tour highlighting how to identify native California plants
Navigate the Getty Center gardens using a plant guide illustrated by Weshoyot Alvitre (Tongva, Scottish) and learn about preserving and protecting white sage (Latin: Salvia apiana; Tongva: Kasili)
