The United States Merchant Marine, also known as the “Fourth Arm of Defense,” has served valiantly and honorably through each American conflict faced.
The World War II West Coast Memorial is located on a high ground overlooking the entrance to San Francisco Harbor. It is at the intersection of Lincoln and Harrison Boulevards in the Presidio of San Francisco, California near the southern edge of the Golden Gate Bridge. There are 413 Missing in Action who are memorialized at this location. One of the Presidio's most poignant monuments, the World War II West Coast Memorial to the Missing looks out over the vast Pacific Ocean.
The West Coast World War II Memorial is a curved wall of California granite set in a grove of Monterey pine and cypress. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, it bears the names of 413 members of the armed forces lost or buried at sea in US Pacific coastal waters between 1941 and 1945. Managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission, the memorial stands as a humble symbol of appreciation and respect. The Presidio is home to many memorials and monuments. Consider including others in your visit, like the Korean War Memorial or the Monument to the Unknown Soldier Dead, located inside San Francisco National Cemetery.
