Congressional Hackathon

The Congressional Hackathon is a long-standing, bipartisan event; many of the ideas that were developed during the Hackathons have since been adopted by Congress.

The 6th Hackathon occurred September 19, 2024 - Congressional Hackathon 6.0  The entire event is available via a YouTube video released by the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer and highlights are also available via YouTube .  Official previous hackathon details are available.  No details of the next Hackathon have been released yet, although both 2023 and 2024 events were held in September.  

From 2023 Hackathon: "The first Congressional Facebook Hackathon was an experiment. We aimed to create a bipartisan forum which gathered together stakeholders from Capitol Hill and programmers from around the country to explore how social media could improve the legislative process"


    The Congressional Hackathon is a long-standing, bipartisan event hosted jointly by bipartisan House leadership. In 2023, the House Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), joined as a co-host of the event. This joint effort delivers on a House Select Committee on Modernization recommendation to institutional the Hackathon.

    This event brings together a bipartisan group of Members of Congress, congressional staff, legislative branch agency staff, open government and transparency advocates, civic hackers, and developers from digital companies to explore the role of digital platforms in the legislative process. Discussions range from data transparency to constituent services, public correspondence, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, committee hearings, and the broader legislative process.

    The events include remarks from House Leaders and updates on the digital and data efforts within the Legislative Branch. Participants are also asked to break into different groups to actively brainstorm and explore new ideas on how to leverage technology to improve and open the legislative branch.

    Many of the ideas that were developed during Congressional Hackathons have since been adopted by Congress.
