Just when you think nothing trivial could unite us (remember Poke-Man fever) and there it is
Wordle.
New York City-based software engineer Josh Wardle created Wordle for his partner, who loves word games, in 2013! It was released to the public in October 2021 by November 1st 90 people were playing it which then exploded to 300,000 on January 2nd.
THEN it happened, the NY Times bought it "for millions" and now Josh Wardle and his partner Palak Shah are now rich - or using a five-letter world HAPPY. Maybe it should be noted that the number 5 is symbolic of harmony and balance. In the Bible, number 5 is used to symbolize divine transformation.
What made it popular. may be the very undoing by the NY Times if they tamper with the formula too much:
- No app
- No registration
- No in-game purchases
- No link to Facebook
- No notifications on your phone
Think about the early episodes of "FRIENDS" where the print-newspaper daily crossword puzzle plays a part in a number of scenes. This is totally unrelatable in today's world. And yet the appeal of Wordle is a daily word. Period. All of us are working on the same puzzle. We can "share" or score but the parameters of WINNING or excelling is very limited so the conversation, in this post lockdown world, is very basic and yet very nice. And although others have spun variations, at this point Josh has submitted 2,500 words to the game so far. Enough for six years at which point we may ask for more. Until then, maybe the e-world needs a very simple wordle.
My first attempt today merited me beginner's luck:
