1959 First Grammy Awards Show Was Bi-Coastal & Had a Controversial Host!
The first Grammy Awards show had events simultaneously in New York and Beverly Hills. The May 4th, 1959 events were not televised. The New York City venue was at the Park Sheraton Hotel, while the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills hosted the west coast event. The host was Mort Sahl, a Canadian who is credited with originating or at least the first to have success in a career using political satire as his trademark. It was 1971 when ABC secured the rights to the first live television broadcast.
While the award, as well as the domain name, is referred to as a "Grammy", a nod to "gramophone"; the organization behind the show and award distribution is "The Recording Academy". There are twelve-chapter cities across the country for the 10,000 members.
"The Recording Academy represents the voices of performers, songwriters, producers, engineers, and all music professionals.....Music is the original melting pot - a unifying blend of creeds and cultures. It makes us dance, helps us celebrate, and reminds us that at our heart, we’re all the same.
The isolation and recognition of Latin Musicians began in 1979. The Latin Recording Academy had 4000 members, representing 37 countries, in February of 2022. The awards this year are based on recordings released during June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023. While a timeline of qualifications and voting are confirmed this year the venue and date of the Latin Grammy Awards have not been determined. About LARAS | LatinGRAMMY.com
