Chatter & Listening in Public Spaces

The arrest of a person setting off explosions in Pasadena was accomplished by law enforcement use of ShotSpotter. "chatter" was used in April in an attempt to find a pedestrian.

A Shotspotter is a device from Sound Thinking which aids in locating the source for audible gun shots based on reports from the community.

The company is based in Fremont, and the device was created by Robert Showen in the 1990s.  According to the company's website:

SoundThinking (formerly ShotSpotter) is a public safety technology company that combines transformative solutions and strategic advisory services for sound decisions, to make neighborhoods safer and improve community confidence.

The company has four devices to aid in law enforcement:

  • Gunshot Detection
  • Crime Analysis & Data
  • Investigation Management
  • Resource Deployment

A similar mention of "listening" was alluded to in the case of a female pedestrian disappeared after being hit by a car in a street-take-over event this past April 13th, 2024.   During a news conference announcing the $25,000 reward for information on her whereabouts and condition,  LAPD Detective Moreno said “Some of our investigators … intercepted some chatter that would lead us to believe that there’s a slight chance that this girl might be deceased. We don’t know who she is, where she is, or how serious her injuries are,”   Missing Persons: Peculiarities of Incidents | San Fernando Valley News Portal (town.news)

The company is demonstrating their device capabilities at this weeks "IACP Technology Conference | International Association of Chiefs of Police (theiacp.org) in Charlotte, NC; the IACP  has existed since 1893.

"serving communities by speaking out on behalf of law enforcement and advancing leadership and professionalism in policing worldwide."
