Earth Day was instigated by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin in 1970 The First Earth Day - HISTORY. 

The first Earth Day indeed increased environmental awareness in America, and in July of 1970 the Environmental Protection Agency was established by special executive order to regulate and enforce national pollution legislation. Earth Day also led to the the passage of the Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts.

Although eight hundred years prior St. Francis of Assisi was noted for his dedication to the flora & fauna. 

"During his life he also developed a deep love of nature and animals and is known as the patron saint of the environment and animals; his life and words have had a lasting resonance with millions of followers across the globe. Each October, many animals the world over are blessed on his feast day."

There are current religious sects of Mennonites, Amish, Friends, Quakers, the early settlers of America such as Pilgrims and Puritans, and the Native Americans had a deep respect and understanding of stewardship of the Earth. Respecting the cycle of life and protecting the land for the next generation to similarly use and tend.  

Amish gardens are built with a strong connection to the Earth.

One amazing fact about Amish gardens is that they are built for over three hundred years based on the instructions imparted by God in terms of tending the Earth gardens as well as everything that is within it. This means that building Amish gardens requires a strong sense of Earth connectedness. Cultivating it is also centered on God and how He wants us to take care of everything within the earth, including the soil and earth themselves, insects, butterflies, birds, and bees.
