San Fernando High School - Oldest High School in SFV

San Fernando High School—SFHS was established in 1896.  The school was originally located at Fifth & Hager Streets, in the City of San Fernando.  The construction of a new campus, on North Brand Boulevard, was completed in 1906 and is now the location of the San Fernando Middle school.  The current location of the High School was established in 1952.   

Notable highlights of the school include

  • 1926, 1937 Tiger Band selected to march in Pasadena Tournament of Roses
  • 1903 First Orange Blossom yearbook, the third oldest yearbook in Southern California
  • 1941-45 More than $300,000 in War Stamps and Bonds were bought and solicited by students and faculty

The program offers courses that will prepare students for college and career success, as well as providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to become active and engaged citizens in their community.

Canoga Park High School was established October 4, 1914, with 14 students and 2 teachers, on the present-day sight of Canoga Park Elementary School. It was originally named Owensmouth High School.  On September 11, 1916, Owensmouth High started the school year with a new building and a new location. This structure was located near the softball field on the present-day Canoga campus facing Hart Street. Two Coastal Live Oak trees were planted by the class of 1920 as a graduation gift and are located on the north-west corner of the property.


The oldest public high school in the city of Los Angeles is Los Angeles High School which was established in 1873. It was originally located on Poundcake Hill . The story of what happened to Poundcake, Normal, Fort Moore, and Bunker Hill is best understood in the KCET documentary "The Lost Hills of Downtown L.A. "


The oldest high school is Loyola High School a private, Roman Catholic, college-preparatory high school for boys. It was established in 1865 and is part of the Society of Jesus. It is the oldest continuously run educational institution in Southern California.
