A number of interesting historical facts have been minimized, as more time and participants pass, of the events in addition to the Battle of Normandy. There were other significant Battles which turned the inevitably of the European Theater being won by the Allies.
The Invasion of Normandy was actually a multi-pronged assault
1. The invasion occurred on June 6th but it continued long into July. And in fact the Allies failed to accomplish their objectives for the first day.
2. The focus was to rescue France, cross the English Channel and invade German occupied Western Europe. It was an effort significantly won by the American, British and Canadian military.
3. The Code name was "Operation Overlord"

4. While the soldiers lived out the battles, Higgins Industries in New Orleans presented a re-enactment on July 23, 1944 of the invasion only 6 weeks prior. Higgins Industries used Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans for their re-enactment which also celebrated their delivery of the 10,000 boat to the Navy during the War efforts.

So, while we and our Nation continue to commemorate this significant battle if only for a day, and movies depict it in a small way; the words and tone of the Canadian Prime Minister spoken on June 6th 1944, should give insight into how much the news of the events affected the families at home and the succinct goal of the invasion on June 6th.
