Bilingual Cosmetologists & Barbers Needed to Review & Adapt Hairstylist Licensing Examination

The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology has been working with the Office of Professional Examination Services (OPES) and subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop the California Hairstylist licensing examination.

The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology has been working with the Office of Professional Examination Services (OPES) and subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop the California Hairstylist licensing examination. 

The Board is now seeking licensed Cosmetologists and Barbers which

  • Hold a current California cosmetologist or barber license
  • Have not received a violation from the Board within the past 5 years
  • Are not currently school instructors or owners
  • Agree to comply with all applicable health and safety laws and regulations and the state agency’s specific health and safety requirements and policies
  • Are Fluent (speak, read, and write) in both English AND either
    • Korean
    • Spanish
    • Simplified Chinese
    • Vietnamese

    to review and adapt/translate the written exam.

    Note: Participants do not need to be currently practicing, but you must be familiar with the current terminology used in the field.


    The Workshop is scheduled for March 21-22, 2023 in Sacramento. Workshops are expected to take the full workday (~8:30am – 5pm).

    Compensation and Benefits

    • The Board provides $40/hour compensation for participation in workshops.
    • SMEs (subject matter experts) will receive reimbursement for approved travel expenses and meals. These reimbursements are made at the state rate and could take up to 6-8 weeks.
