Chumash Annual Tomol Crossing

A rotating crew of paddlers crossed the Santa Barbara Channel in the traditional Chumash tomol plank canoe & reached the island of Limuw (Santa Cruz) in the Channel Islands National Park.

"On Saturday (8/12/23), members of the Chumash community embarked on their annual Tomol Crossing for the 20th time in the modern era. A rotating crew of paddlers crossed the Santa Barbara Channel in the traditional Chumash tomol plank canoe called Muptami, or “Deep Memories,” and reached the island of Limuw (Santa Cruz) in the Channel Islands National Park.

This crossing and arrival represent a pilgrimage for the Chumash people, and an opportunity to spend time together on Limuw celebrating Chumash culture and the deep spiritual connection to their sacred ancestral island."
