The San Fernando Valley, Southern California, and even California continues with a dramatically decreasing presence in the annual nominees and eventually winners of the James Beard Restaurant Awards. One winner in 2023 was from Sherman Oaks from eight Southern California nominees. However, none of the four Southern California nominees in 2022 won. Yet, one nominee continues to do well.
- Angry Egret Dinette, in Chinatown was nominated best new restaurant in 2022. Chef Avila has previously been nominated by the organization. Hedecided to move his location, which opened in Oct 2020, to Beverly Hills this year. Angry Egret Dinette
The ceremony was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of Covid shutdowns impacting the industry along with questions concerning ethics of the nominees.
