The first In-N-Out opened in 1948. It was much smaller than the standard locations seen around Southern California. The 10 square feet in size is about the size of "MunchBox" in Chatsworth on Devonshire, without inside seating, and a few other local hamburger sites still standing throughout the Valley. There are twelve In-N-Out locations in the San Fernando Valley
The Munch Box was made a Historical Site in 2003 by the City of Los Angeles. (Marker Number 750.) The Munch Box Historical Marker (hmdb.org). The architecture is called Googie (not google) popularized by roadside businesses for it's futuristic style (think Jetson's). Googie was the nickname for the wife of Googie's Coffee Shop in Hollywood, which was the first such architectural roadside design by John Lautner. It was demolished in 1989. Conversely the original In-N-Out was a square box with a very large sign. It was torn down to accommodate a freeway overpass, so the museum was erected across the street. The company store is also at this location. In-N-Out Burger Company Store & History - In-N-Out Burger

Replica Of First Restaurant Opens
Step back in time at the replica of In-N-Out Burger's original drive-thru restaurant located in Baldwin Park, California.
The first restaurant served customers from a space barely 100 square feet, introducing them to a taste of some of the freshest hamburgers around. The menu today offers made-to-order burgers, fries and drinks prepared and served in the classic style guests have been enjoying since 1948.
Visit this part of In-N-Out history for viewing and photos Thursday-Sunday between the hours of 11am to 2pm at 13752 Francisquito Avenue, Baldwin Park, CA 91706.
