The 1 1/4-mile (10 furlong) Derby is frequently referred to as “The Run for the Roses,” because a lush blanket of 554 red roses is awarded to the Kentucky Derby winner each year. Only three-year-old Thoroughbreds can qualify for the Kentucky Derby

Seventeen of the twenty horses racing Saturday were born in Kentucky. Two horses are from outside of America and one is from Florida.

LAST MINUTE CHANGES

Sonny Leon (32 yrs old from La Victoria, Aragua, Venezuela) will be riding Rich Strike and will start from post position 20, for trainer Eric Reed.
He will be replacing Ethereal Road who's trainer D. Wayne Lukas chose to scratch the horse Friday.
Ethereal Road entered the race at the last minute after a defection took Un Ojo out of the race.

California's entry at the Kentucky Derby has been slim. Perhaps a reflection of troubles occurring at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park with ill horse.

However, our spectator contribution to the fashion parade is without exception notable. A large number of "Hollywood" celebrities will be in Kentucky tomorrow. The ongoing fascination with Dannielynn Hope Marshall Birkhead , daughter of the late Anna Nicole Smith, continues to give a glimpse, if only once a year of the little girl now in her teens.

California Chrome (foaled February 18, 2011) won the 2014 Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and 2016 Dubai World Cup. He was an entry from Harris Ranch (a division of Harris Ranch Meat). This the last time a California born horse won the Derby.

The Derby is usually attended by over 150,000 people eager to watch the beginning of the Triple Crown races. 2020 there were no attendees although the race was held in September rather than May. 2021 there were 51,838 attendees.

Last year all seats included unlimited food and drinks, to reduce contamination by people congregating in lines and exchanging money. The new process is repeated this year after it was well received. Another of many changes from the Pandemic which have actually improved processes.

The oldest jockey riding in the 2022 Kentucky Derby is Mike E. Smith, born in New Mexico, August 10, 1965. He will be riding Taiba. He won the Kentucky Derby in 2005 and 2018 also winning the Triple Crown that year.

The youngest jockey riding in the Derby this year is Reylu Gutierrez, born in Rochester, NY, July, 27, 1996. He will be riding Barber Road.
