The River needs YOU! This summer, join FoLAR in the Glendale Narrows to collect trash and prevent waste from polluting our watershed and urban waterways. Together, we’ll make a collective impact and do our part to tend to the vibrant urban ecosystems that thrive throughout Los Angeles.
The Glendale Narrows Riverwalk, located within the scenic 11-mile natural bottom Glendale Narrows stretch of the River, is a landscaped recreational trail, perfect for pedestrians and bicyclists, running along the north bank of the River across from Griffith Park. The Riverwalk currently includes 2 small parks, an equestrian facility, and public art installations, and there are projects underway to extend the trail and even construct a bridge across the River to Griffith Park!
CleanUp supplies (work gloves and trash bags), hand sanitizer, and a water station are provided.
There are areas of this site where you may need to wade into the water in order to access the island that we’ll be cleaning, so wear sturdy, close-toed shoes you don’t mind getting wet, or boots or water shoes if you have them. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen and a hat. We’re providing cleanup supplies, so all you need to bring is a reusable water bottle - we’ll have ice water available onsite.
In collaboration with My Friend's Place, we'll be hosting a donation drive at this site. Volunteers are encouraged to donate any of the following new/gently used items to support youth experiencing homelessness: tents, sleeping bags, blankets, portable phone chargers, tote bags/other bags, unisex joggers and hoodies, and masculine pants and shoes (especially sizes 10-13). Donated items will be given to our partners at My Friend's Place to distribute to unhoused youth during their programs.
The CleanUp spans weekends in June and July, excluding the July 4th holiday weekend.
We focus our CleanUps in the three natural-bottom sections of the River
The verdant riparian vegetation in these sections makes it very easy for trash to get caught up and entangled in the River, polluting the water and habitat that is so important for the wildlife that calls the River home as well as the thousands of Angelenos that live and recreate along the River.
With your help, we can make an immediate, hands-on impact on LA’s urban ecosystems and contribute to a healthy and thriving LA River for the benefit of River-adjacent communities, visitors to the LA River, and of course LA’s urban wildlife.
Register Early - CleanUps are structured as limited capacity morning volunteer shifts. Register early to ensure your spot at one of our sites listed below.
