The verdant riparian vegetation in these sections makes it very easy for trash to get caught up and entangled in the River, polluting the water and habitat that is so important for the wildlife that calls the River home as well as the thousands of Angelenos that live and recreate along the River.
With your help, we can make an immediate, hands-on impact on LA’s urban ecosystems and contribute to a healthy and thriving LA River for the benefit of River-adjacent communities, visitors to the LA River, and of course LA’s urban wildlife.
Register Early - CleanUps are structured as limited capacity morning volunteer shifts. Register early to ensure your spot at one of our sites listed below.
Individual Registration Only - Due to liability reasons, there is not a process for group signup and each individual member of a group is responsible for registering themselves.
All Ages Welcome - Angelenos of all ages are welcome to join a CleanUp! Parents or guardians must register and agree to our digital event waiver on behalf of youth below the age of 18. We also encourage parents and guardians to accompany youth 16 and younger to the event.
Gloves and Trash Bags Supplied - We have work gloves and trash bags available at each site for volunteer use, and we encourage volunteers to bring containers that can be reused as trash receptacles to reduce plastic waste (e.g. buckets, old pillow cases, empty pet food bags).
Ice Water Onsite - Bring Your Reusable Water Bottle - We’re working to clean up our river and cut down on plastic waste, so don’t forget to pack your reusable water bottle.
Be Prepared - Each CleanUp site is very different, some with higher water levels and small rapids, others thick with vegetation. Read carefully on each site’s registration page to determine if the site is good for you. Always plan to wear sturdy close-toed shoes, boots or water shoes if you have them, and clothes you can get dirty.
We’re Careful - To ensure our CleanUps do not negatively impact River wildlife, we work with local biologists to survey each site and cordon off any areas with nests or sensitive habitat.
Respect Others - Individuals experiencing homelessness may be at or near CleanUp sites. Volunteers are expected to treat our unhoused neighbors with compassion, dignity, and respect, and should refrain from disposing of their belongings.
Health and Safety - Masks and social distancing are recommended but not required. Proof of vaccination or negative test is not required, however we strongly recommend that volunteers are up-to-date with a COVID-19 vaccine and boosters. We always monitor local public health guidelines and will update you as needed. If you are: feeling symptoms consistent with COVID-19; have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 5 days; or have been exposed or come into contact with a COVID-19 case, please refer to the CDC guidelines on Quarantine and Isolation to determine if it is safe for you to report to your CleanUp site.
