The River needs YOU! This summer, join FoLAR in the Glendale Narrows to collect trash and prevent waste from polluting our watershed and urban waterways. Together, we’ll make a collective impact and do our part to tend to the vibrant urban ecosystems that thrive throughout Los Angeles.
Bond Park is located in Atwater Village along the scenic Glendale Narrows, the central and longest natural area of the LA River. The River has an earthen bottom here, with tall trees, sandbar islands, and lots of birds, including ducks, stilts, egrets, and herons.
CleanUp supplies (work gloves and trash bags), hand sanitizer, and a water station are provided.
There are areas of this site where you may need to wade into the water and cross small rapids in order to access the island that we’ll be cleaning, so wear sturdy, close-toed shoes you don’t mind getting wet, or boots or water shoes if you have them. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen and a hat. We’re providing cleanup supplies, so all you need to bring is a reusable water bottle - we’ll have ice water available onsite.
In collaboration with the SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition, we'll be hosting a donation drive at this site. Volunteers are encouraged to donate any of the following items: new sandals/flip flops, sunscreen, hat/shade coverings, electrolyte powder, canned goods, individually wrapped snacks (e.g. granola bars, snack sized bags of chips, etc), hygiene kits, first aid kits, hand/body wipes, and batteries. Donated items will be given to our partners at SELAH to distribute to unhoused individuals along the River during their weekly engagement walks and monthly distribution events.
Individuals experiencing homelessness may be at or near this CleanUp site. Volunteers are expected to treat our unhoused neighbors with compassion, dignity, and respect, and should refrain from disposing of their belongings. Volunteers should be aware that toxic or hazardous trash may be found at this site, and for safety reasons, volunteers should refrain from disposing of this kind of trash and instead alert a FoLAR staff member.
The CleanUp spans weekends in June and July, excluding the July 4th holiday weekend.
We focus our CleanUps in the three natural-bottom sections of the River
The verdant riparian vegetation in these sections makes it very easy for trash to get caught up and entangled in the River, polluting the water and habitat that is so important for the wildlife that calls the River home as well as the thousands of Angelenos that live and recreate along the River.
With your help, we can make an immediate, hands-on impact on LA’s urban ecosystems and contribute to a healthy and thriving LA River for the benefit of River-adjacent communities, visitors to the LA River, and of course LA’s urban wildlife.
