SB-864 Mandates Hospitals to Include Testing for Fentanyl Until 2028

Statistics reveal a need for the solution to homelessness also address the flow of fentanyl into those communities and now freely entering into the high schools of Los Angeles.

SB-864 was authored and introduced in January 2022 by State Senator Melissa Melendez of the 28th Senate District, in Riverside County & State Senator Pat Bates of the 36th Senate District in Laguna Niguel.  It was approved by Governor Newsom August 18, 2022, and became law . Bill Status - SB-864 General acute care hospitals: drug screening.

The new law states: " If a person is treated at a general acute care hospital and the hospital conducts a urine drug screening to assist in diagnosing the patient’s condition, the hospital shall include testing for fentanyl in the urine drug screening."
