The staff of the City of Calabasas Traffic & Transportation Commission met with companies and agencies, as requested by the City Council, in order to ascertain the dynamics of going forward with a permanent micro transit program: "Microtransit consists of a multi-passenger transportation service that serves passengers using dynamically generated routes."
- Slidr - rideshare app. Established in 2016 by Michael Trombino of Florida initially as a golf cart app.
- Spare - "Automated on-demand transportation technology that transforms lives and communities." Established in 2015, Vancouver, BC, by Kristoffer Vik Hansen, Josh Andrews, Alexey Indeev
- RideCo - "The first company to offer an on-demand solution to help agencies and municipalities transform their transit systems." Established in, Waterloo, Ontario CA, 2000 by Prem Gururajan
- "and others" used by Los Angeles County
- City of Agoura Hills "to discuss their new program"
- Attended a Local Transit Systems Subcommittee (LTSS) where LA County Metro presented on their program.
The transportation services current in place by the City of Calabasas include (stats are for a 5 month period)
- Line 1, Peak Hour Shuttle Routes (Lines 2-5) Line 1 operates Monday-Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 on a fixed route and schedule throughout City Limits
- Line 1 averaged 480 riders in 2022-2023
- Line 1 cost per passenger of $44.71,
- Seasonal Trolley
- Seasonal Beach Bus
- Dial-a-Ride
- The pilot microtransit program operates only on the weekend 9 a.m. to 5.p.m., and allowing rides door-to-door anywhere in the City of Calabasas
Over the 5 months the pilot has been in operation
- 360 unique passenger trips (UPT)
- Monthly average of 70 riders.
- 74% of these riders are not registered with Dial-A-Ride
- Our existing cost per passenger for this program is
$102.67, with a 3% offset generated by fares.
- 82% of destinations are within the city limits, with the rest of the trips going to
- Topanga Mall
- Kaiser Medical
- and religious centers outside of the City.
Staff did not collect specific rider profile information, but based on information provided by the service provider, riders were a majority middle-aged, with some riders in their 20s and a few seniors.
The next steps are to determine what the community wants from a microtransit program. Once this has been identified, an RFP (request for proposal) will be issued; due to the expected base-cost of the program. Calabasas’ policy is to issue an RFP to select the service provider.
