The staff of the City of Calabasas Traffic & Transportation Commission met with companies and agencies, as requested by the City Council, in order to ascertain the dynamics of going forward with a permanent micro transit program: "Microtransit consists of a multi-passenger transportation service that serves passengers using dynamically generated routes."

  • Slidr - rideshare app. Established in 2016 by Michael Trombino of Florida initially as a golf cart app.
  • Spare - "Automated on-demand transportation technology that transforms lives and communities." Established in 2015, Vancouver, BC, by Kristoffer Vik Hansen, Josh Andrews, Alexey Indeev

The transportation services current in place by the City of Calabasas include (stats are for a 5 month period)

  • Line 1, Peak Hour Shuttle Routes (Lines 2-5) Line 1 operates Monday-Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 on a fixed route and schedule throughout City Limits
    • Line 1 averaged 480 riders in 2022-2023
    • Line 1 cost per passenger of $44.71,
  • Seasonal Trolley
  • Seasonal Beach Bus
  • Dial-a-Ride
  • The pilot microtransit program operates only on the weekend 9 a.m. to 5.p.m., and allowing rides door-to-door anywhere in the City of Calabasas

Over the 5 months the pilot has been in operation

  • 360 unique passenger trips (UPT)
  • Monthly average of 70 riders.
  • 74% of these riders are not registered with Dial-A-Ride
  • Our existing cost per passenger for this program is
$102.67, with a 3% offset generated by fares.
  • 82% of destinations are within the city limits, with the rest of the trips going to
    • Topanga Mall
    • Kaiser Medical
    • and religious centers outside of the City.

Staff did not collect specific rider profile information, but based on information provided by the service provider, riders were a majority middle-aged, with some riders in their 20s and a few seniors.

The next steps are to determine what the community wants from a microtransit program. Once this has been identified, an RFP (request for proposal) will be issued; due to the expected base-cost of the program. Calabasas’ policy is to issue an RFP to select the service provider.
