Recall Newsom Petition Press Conference

A Petition to recall Governor Newsom was endorsed by Mel Gibson February; he lost his home in the Palisades fire and has been outspoken about the Governors onus for the tragedy.

Last August, Senate Constitutional Amendment No. 1. was passed and is now scheduled to be on the November 3, 2026 ballot. It would change the responsibilities of a Governor , Lieutenant Governor, or Secretary of State during a recall process.   It would not have any effect on Governor Newsom during the upcoming recall.  However, Newsom's term expires January 2027, he cannot run a third time for the office of Governor.

Section 17 of Article II thereof is amended to read:

"If recall of the Governor or Secretary of State is initiated, the recall duties of that office shall be performed by the Secretary of State or Controller, respectively. If recalls of the Governor and Secretary of State are initiated at the same time, the recall duties of both offices shall be performed by the Controller."

The recall Governor Newsom petition is not listed on the California Secretary of State website "as of February 3", which would indicate a 3-week lag by that office. However, the organizers of the petition, SavingCalifornia.vote, do have an undated press announcement on their website, including this opening statement:

"Governor Gavin Newsom to Be Formally Served Recall Papers in Next Two Weeks Following Los Angeles Wildfire Catastrophe"

A review of social media posts indicates the number of signatures required to initiate the petition had to be increased and therefore resubmitted. "Savingcalifornia.vote is in the process of resubmitting the legally required number of qualified signatures, per the election code."

An Instagram post by SavingCalifornia indicates todays press conference will detail the initiative is now on track.

"Tune in TODAY for the LIVE press conference as we take the next steps in officially recalling Governor Gavin Newsom. Saving California Chairman Randy Economy will be joined by Mel Gibson, Bishop Juan Carlos Mendez, and fire victims to discuss the movement, fundraising, and the critical signature gathering process."
