Community Update: Boething Treeland Nursery Sale - Hidden Hills
The online statement, by the Hidden Hills Mayor, addressed questions most likely to be asked by residents, given that the property is adjacent to homes in Hidden Hills while located in Los Angeles City (Woodland Hills).
No statement has been placed on the Boething website...yet.
Boething has gone thru much resistance, in recent years, to sell/develop the property they have owned since 1952, which is prior to probably most property in Hidden Hills. History - Boething Treeland Farms Boething has been a unique a source of plants and garden resources for many residents and businesses to improve their landscape. "Celebrating 70 years growing and delivering plants throughout the Western United States"
Noteworthy highlights of online comments by the Mayor of Hidden Hills :
- The parcel is not within the City’s sphere of influence, meaning it is outside our jurisdiction and traditional land use authority
- The Mayor admitted notifying the City of Los Angeles about the sale (not the County) and the "intended use"
- The Mayor then "requested a meeting with the new owners". He doesn't say if he was granted the meeting but instead said "and here is what we were told"
- The property will be developed as a cemetery, similar to another site owned and operated by the same company:
- While they Mayor doesn't identify the company he does provide an odd and vaguely titled link: Comparable Property (link provided by the owner) "
- If you follow link it is actually Dignity Memorial in Newhall
- The Newhall cemetery is 220 acres. The Boething Treeland Hidden Hills property is 32 acres.(Total acreage of Boething Treeland is 850 acres which includes Ventura properties)
- The Mayor details the result of his conversation with the City of Los Angeles.
- "No additional zoning approvals are required for cemetery use."
- And his conclusion or invitation to consider "...we do not expect there will be significant, if any, public input in this process."
- The Mayor offsets the benefit of the new owners by contrasting other projects and objections; without directly referencing the years of discussion fended thru the Woodland Hills Neighborhood Council
- "This project will avoid large-scale development and the associated years of construction and increased traffic, while preserving open space."
- "The entrances will be located on Valley Circle Blvd., reducing through-traffic at our gates and maintaining the privacy of Hidden Hills."
- "We understand that most services will be held between 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and that the architectural design will be aesthetically compatible with the neighborhood—featuring discreet lighting, lush landscaping, and modest structures."
He closed his statement with a disclaimer:
"It is important to note that the City of Hidden Hills has not been a decision-making party in this process."
