Traumatic Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injury can affect the person differently & no two brain injuries are the same. The effects of a are complex & depend on factors such as cause, location, & severity.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) defines a traumatic brain injury (TBI) as a disruption in the normal function of the brain that can be caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or penetrating head injury. This happens to about 1.7 million Americans each year. 53,000 deaths, 235,000 trips to the hospital, and 1.1 million trips to the ER each year are because of TBI.  TBI - CA Department of Rehabilitation

People who have traumatic brain injuries can receive services from the TBI program sites and find community resources.

An example of one family's journey is visible online:

The family of Josh Luter began posting on Instagram, March 2025, their ongoing progress with him. He was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident April 11, 2021, when he was 19 years old, in Missouri.  The accident resulted in a traumatic brain injury, dissected arteries, multiple strokes, and several broken bones, including a broken tibia, fibula, wrist damage, and a broken nose. The family initiated an online go-fund-me page.
