The community of Sun Valley was originally called Wixánga, by the Tongva/Fernandeño native Americans. A reference to the prickly cactus prevalent in the area.  The McClay claim on the land in 1874, in fact all 56,000 acres spreading across the area, was not divided until two years later with Southern Pacific Railroad came through the land.   The area became known as Roscoe, based upon the name of a railroad employee who most likely lived nearby.  By the 1950's residents had chosen Sun Valley for the community name.

Noteworthy in the community is the Theodore Payne Foundation which focuses on native plant education and support.  History | Theodore Payne Foundation The foundation is name after  horticulturist and conservationist Theodore Payne (1872-1963) and was established in 1960.
