Deer Creek Grove Within Sequoia Nat'l Forest is 160 Miles from Van Nuys!

All too often the opportunity to visit the historic redwoods is dismissed based on distance. However, of the 34 groves of Sequoias the closest is in Tulare County, and actually a day trip away! The elevation at the base/mouth is 203ft and rises to  7,560 ft (2,300 m) at the top!

"The road to the grove is closed in the winter and spring, until as late as June 15th. During this time the grove can still be accessed by hiking an enjoyable if somewhat mundane 5-mile loop, starting with a climb up the Deer Creek Trail, a well-maintained singletrack route that mostly seems to be used by local equestrians."

An itemized list and map of all 34 groves is available on the National Park Service website.

WikiWander describes it as Deer Creek (Tulare County, California) - Wikiwand and "Originally it ran into Tulare Lake before it was diverted for agriculture."

While some hiking websites downplay Deer Creek, in comparison to other groves it may be the only opportunity for many to see a sequoia grove.

"Although some of the trees are pretty good-sized, as a whole the grove isn’t anything special; it’s only about 200 yards long and only about a dozen big trees are visible, most of which are obscured by foliage."
