While contamination of fentanyl is addressed by the EPA; Frontiers, a research publisher, suggests preparedness from the deliberate release of synthetic opioids.
A November 2022 article by the U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) suggested the agency was working on protocol for remediation of contaminated environments, however it leads with a six-and-a-half year old statement:
"In March 2016, the Drug and Enforcement Administration (DEA) issued a nationwide alert about fentanyl stating that overdoses were occurring at alarming rates and represent a significant threat to public health and safety"
The article concludes:
"EPA researchers are working closely with EPA responders to ensure that federal, state, Tribal, and local responders and hazmat teams are prepared with the best science to respond to incidents that involve synthetic opioids, including fentanyl." Now while independent agencies are expressing concern over criminal weaponization of fentanyl there is limited Government agency details to combat such an event.
The manufacturing of fentanyl and its analogs is not dependent on agricultural inputs (as with heroin), but rather on the availability of laboratory equipment and chemical precursors, which are much more difficult to detect than fields of opium poppies.
Frontiers, the 3rd most-cited and 6th largest research publisher and open science platform, has suggested a need for Public health and medical preparedness for mass casualties from the deliberate release of synthetic opioids. in this May 2023 research paper.
